| T.E.S. Working Student Program |

Purpose of the Program:
The program is designed to teach the working student general horse care and barn management skills as well as how to provide ground assistance to all T.E.S. students. |

Requirements
Candidates may be nominated by their instructor or invited to apply by a senior working student and must meet the following requirements:
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must provide proof of medical insurance coverage.
- Must be a student at T.E.S. for a minimum of 6 months (or 12 months if lessons began at Intro to
- Riding level).
- Must be able to catch and halter a horse.
- Must be able to lead and tie a horse correctly and safely.
- Must be familiar with and efficient at T.E.S. basic grooming techniques.
- Must be able tack either English or Western quickly and correctly.
- Must be able to recognize different items of tack by proper name and use.
If you meet these requirements, an interview with a working student supervisor will be scheduled. You will fill out an application and health insurance affidavit before training commences.
You must also agree to:
- Attend the complete series of working student seminars and meetings (8 consecutive Monday evenings); and
- Take the Horsemanship Class for both Western and English tack.
Training
After acceptance into the program, there will be a 3 month probationary period of training. The hours a trainee works may accrue toward lessons at 1/2 hour per hour worked. The training period is designed to include a series of 6 seminars, plus a minimum of 16 hours of barn time under the supervision of a senior working student. Tests will be given on all procedures and pass/fail decisions will be made by the Working Student Training Committee. If a test is failed, further training will be required.

Training will include:
- Advanced grooming techniques: bathing, clipping and trimming, pulling manes and tails.
- Care of tack and barn maintenance: tack cleaning and repair; use of special tack; fitting bridles and saddles; feed room procedures and maintenance.
- Medication and care of sick horses: first aid and horse behavior.
- Client relations, T.E.S. programs and LAEC activities.
- General horse care and maintenance.
Working students will be given one free group lesson in exchange for 8 hours worked.
Working students are also invited to join all non-mounted seminars offered at T.E.S. on a complimentary basis (e.g., Horse of Your Own lecture; Show Prep clinics, etc.).
Duties and Obligations
Duties and obligations include: commitment to work schedule, barn maintenance and general care of horses.
Working students must agree to be on time for scheduled hours. If you are unable to come at your scheduled time, contact the working student supervisor assigned to you (a senior working student) to give at least a week's notice to arrange for a proper substitute.
Working students must sign-in and sign-out in the school office for each shift worked. |

Work assignments include:
- Assist students to tack properly as they prepare for their riding classes, using the correct equipment.
- Assist students in working with the horses.
- Maintain tack in clean, working order and keep it in its proper place.
- Maintain neatness in tack rooms.
- Administer oral medications and leg wrapping.
- Blanket (when weather requires).
- Check stalls: feed bins should be clean and food eaten; waterers should be in working order; salt blocks in place; stalls latched closed.
- Daytime feeding.
- Assist in turnout and exercise (especially on rainy days).
- Hoof care: inspect hooves, clean and maintain them.
- Keep barn aisles clean and safe.
- Maintain neatness in feed room and medicine cabinet.
