The BHS has a long history and tradition and is the UK national governing body for recreational riding and training. Its certification program for riding instructors has been in existence for over 70 years and it is officially recognized in 29 countries. Those with BHS certification are eligible to apply for an International Trainer's Passport.
 
All trainers and trainees should be encouraged to work towards BHS certification because:

  • it has a tradition and proven quality which are understood and sought after by the equine industry world-wide.
  • it is officially recognized in 29 countries, thus improving training and job opportunities overseas.
  • it has been harmonized with the qualifications of 28 other equestrian nations.
  • it is practical and straight-forward.
  • it is available at BHS approved centers in the USA and worldwide.

    Certification Levels (from lowest to highest)

  • BHSAI (British Horse Society Assistant Instructor, includes Stages 1-3 Horse Knowledge and Care) -- Qualified to teach class and individual lessons at a sound basic level for dressage and jumping and to ride to this level. Also lunge and lead line lessons as well as looking after a small group of horses.
  • BHS Int. SM (Intermediate Stable Manager & Stage 4 Horse Knowledge and Care) -- Qualified to take sole charge of the care and management of a group of horses and in the running of a small barn/riding center.
  • BHSII (British Horse Society Intermediate Instructor) -- Qualified to teach class and individual lessons to Elementary Dressage, Novice Horse Trials and Novice Show Jumping level and ride at these levels. Also qualified to give lunge lessons and teach all Riding Club and Pony Club levels and take sole charge of a group of horses.
  • BHS SM (British Horse Society Stable Manager Certificate) -- Experienced in all aspects of horse care and the efficient running of a large commercial/competition barn/riding center, including teaching stable management to Stage 4 level.
  • BHSI (British Horse Society Instructor) -- Teaches and trains to Medium Dressage, Intermediate Horse Trials and Intermediate show jumping level.
  • FBHS (Fellowship of the British Horse Society) -- The highest qualification. Holder can teach to the highest level and are persons to whom other may turn for advice in various spheres of equestrian activities.
